NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - Despite six saves by Andrea Kaminski, Cincinnati fell to Rutgers, 2-0, in women's soccer action on Friday night at Yurcak Field. The loss means the Bearcats must win or tie Seton Hall on Sunday to clinch a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament.
The Scarlet Knights owned a 20-4 edge in shots in improving to 13-2-2 overall and 7-1-2 in the league. The Bearcats were shut out for the fifth time in the last seven matches to fall to 7-7-2, 3-5-1 in the BIG EAST.
Erin Guthrie made two saves for RU to record her ninth shutout. It was the 12th shutout of the year overall for the Scarlet Knights. Kaminski made over five saves in a match for the fifth time this year. She stopped a penalty kick by Nicole Aquila in the 84th minute.
"Rutgers played very, very hard," said head coach Meridy Glenn. "Their effort reflected their respect for us. We were strong in bits and pieces. We just needed to be solid all the way through."
After a scoreless first half, Rutgers got on the board in the 57th minute as Alicia Hall headed a Gina DeMaio corner kick to Karla Schacher, who headed it home for her seventh goal of the year.
Schacher scored the second goal as well, taking a pass from Jaime Komar in front and beating Kaminski.
The Bearcats and Pirates face off in the regular season finale on Sunday, Oct. 22 at Noon ET. A loss by UC will necessitate that the Bearcats host No. 1 Notre Dame on Tuesday, Oct. 24 to remake the game cancelled by lightning on Sept. 22. The game would be at 7 p.m. at Gettler Stadium. UC would need to defeat the Irish to advance to the tournament.
