SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati men's golf team takes one step closer to the conclusion of its fall season when it travels to the F&M Bank Intercollegiate on Oct. 23-24. The two-day tournament will be hosted by Austin Peay at the Links at Novadell in Hopkinsville, Ky. The Bearcats, behind senior Geoff Newman, are coming off their best tournament finish of the year, a third-place showing at the Crowne Plaza Colonial Classic.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: A full field of 18 teams will travel to the Links at Novadell in Hopkinsville, Ky. for the 2006 F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate. The 54-hole, two-day tournament gets underway on Monday, Oct. 23 at 8 a.m. CT with 36 holes. Play wraps up a day later at 9 a.m. CT with the final 18 holes. Western Illinois is the defending team champion, topping Austin Peay by four strokes last year. The field for the tournament, with Golfweek rankings, includes Austin Peay (121), which will field two squads, Belmont (186), Cincinnati (222), Dayton (227), Eastern Illinois (230), IPFW (266), IUPUI (218), Lipscomb (241), Morehead State (131), Murray State (179), Samford (139), Tennessee State (215), Tennessee Tech (187), Tennessee-Martin (235), Troy (100), Western Illinois (153) and Wright State (196). Cincinnati last played in the event in 2004, earning a 16th place finish.
THE LINE-UP: Cincinnati will go with the same five-player line-up that finished third at the Crowne Plaza Colonial Classic two weeks ago. Geoff Newman, fresh off a runner-up finish at the event, will occupy the top spot, with sophomore Albert Fernandez in the number two hole. Junior Alex Wenzel, senior Joe Young and sophomore Paul Marshall will be in the 3-4-5 positions.
LEADING THE WAY: The unquestioned leader and top player for the Bearcats this fall has been senior Geoff Newman. In four tournaments, Newman has finished in the top-20 in each, with a pair of top-five tallies to his credit. The Cincinnati native holds a team-best 73.0 average and has twice registered the squad's lowest round of the season with a 70.
LAST TIME OUT: Geoff Newman fired a final round 70 to earn a share of runner-up honors at the Crowne Plaza Colonial Classic. Newman, who ranked fifth through one day of play, matched his season low score to finish the event with a score of 143. The Bearcats saw their team score jump eight shots from the opening round to 304, placing third with a total of 600. Paul Marshall made the biggest move for the Bearcats, carding a 74 in the finale to rise to a tie for 11th. Marshall held 19th place through 18 holes.
