SETTING THE SCENE: The postseason hopes of the Cincinnati women's soccer team come down to one match as the Bearcats must beat No. 1 Notre Dame to qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament. UC, with a record of 7-8-2 overall and 3-6-1 in the league, will host the undefeated Irish on Tuesday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. at Gettler Stadium. The game is a make-up for the match cancelled by lightning on Sept. 22.
STORYLINES:
The Bearcats are one point behind Seton Hall for the final spot in the tournament and the Pirates own the tie-breaker.
A win by UC would earn it the fifth-seed out of the National Division and the Bearcats would travel to face St. John's on Thursday.
Head coach Meridy Glenn is in her 24th season at the helm of the Bearcats and owns a 249-172-34 career record.
Freshman Andrea Kaminski has posted six shutouts in net and is fourth in the BIG EAST in saves.
Of the Bearcats' 187 starts, 127 have come from players in their first or second year at UC.
Notre Dame leads the all-time series with the Bearcats, 5-1-1.
The Irish are 16-0-1 overall and 9-0-1 in the BIG EAST. They have clinched the top seed in the league tournament. Kerri Hanks (14 G, 10 A) and Michelle Weissenhofer (10 G, 15 A) both rank in the top 10 in the nation in scoring. The Irish rank among the top six in the country in goals per game (3.25) and goals against average (0.29).
NOTES FROM RUTGERS AND SETON HALL WEEKEND:
The Bearcats were shutout twice, marking six times in the last eight matches they have failed to score.
UC dropped consecutive matches for just the second time this season.
The four shots recorded by UC in each match marked season-lows.
UPSET-MINDED BEARCATS:
The last time a No. 1 team faced UC in Cincinnati, the Bearcats nearly pulled the upset. On Sept. 16, 1990 top-ranked Virginia came to Metalex Park and netted the game-winner with 10 seconds left for a 1-0 win. The last No. 1 team to invade Gettler Stadium was the Connecticut men last year, who were defeated by UC, 2-0.
APPROACHING MILESTONE:
In 2001 Head Coach Meridy Glenn became the first female in NCAA Division I history to earn 200 career women's soccer victories. Now in her 24th season, she is just one short of reaching 250 career wins. She is the second-winningest female coach in NCAA Division I history and 13th all-time in career wins.
KAMINSKI SOLID IN NET:
Freshman keeper Andrea Kaminski started her career off right by making five saves in UC's season-opening 1-0 win over Kentucky. For her efforts she was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week on Aug. 28. She opened her career with 227:52 of scoreless netminding. She is fourth in the BIG EAST with 80 saves and sixth with six shutouts.
MAKING THEM COUNT:
Senior Becky Imhoff has netted four goals this season to lead the team and every one of them have counted. All four of her markers have been gamewinners, earning UC wins over Miami (Ohio), Cleveland State, Georgetown and USF. The four gamewinners is tied for fourth in the BIG EAST.
TAKING THE SHOTS:
The Bearcats, despite scoring just twice in the last six matches, have not had any trouble getting shots off. UC has outshot its opponent in seven of its last 10 matches and in 10 of 17 overall this year.
DROUGHT LEADS TO LOSSES:
After scoring three goals each in consecutive wins over Cleveland State and DePaul in September, the Bearcats have had trouble denting the scorebaord. UC has netted just two goals in last eight matches, resulting in a 2-5-1 mark in that stretch.
MacDONALD FINDS THE NET:
After being a constant scoring threat for the Bearcats in every match, freshman Erin MacDonald finally broke into the scoring column with the first two goals of her career in UC's 3-0 win over Cleveland State on Sept. 17. She added her third a match later against DePaul. For the season, MacDonald is second on the team with six points.
POWER OF YOUTH:
While the Bearcats return nine starters, they are indeed a young team. Eighteen players are in their first or second year at UC. Of the 187 starts made this year, 127 have been made by these players.
