SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati women's rowing team opens its 2006-07 season this weekend, travelling to the Head of the Iowa Regatta. The Bearcats were originally scheduled to compete at the Head of the Elk, but that event was cancelled. Instead, UC will compete in several different classes on the Iowa River against teams from across the Midwest.

ABOUT THE REGATTA: A total of 16 schools will be represented at the 2006 Head of the Iowa Regatta. UC will compete against squads from across the Midwest including BIG EAST rival Marquette and Wisconsin, which finished last season ranked 10th nationally. Rounding out the field will be teams from Augustana, Chicago, Creighton, Drake, Grand Valley State, Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Kansas, Kansas State, Nebraska, Northern Michigan and Northwestern. UC will field crews in the varsity four, varsity eight and novice eight races, along with multiple boats in pairs competition.

ABOUT THE BEARCATS: The Bearcats return 22 letterwinners for second-year head coach Pam Mork. Of the returnees, seven spent at least part of last season on the first varsity eight crew, including junior coxswain Liz Johnson. Other top athletes returning include seniors Sarah Lautenslager, Jodie Lush and Elizabeth Tremblay, juniors Beth Murphy, Katie Stoll and Lisa Teague and sophomore Sarah White.

FOLLOW THE EVENT: Complete information of the 2006 edition of the Head of the Iowa Regatta is available by logging onto www.regattacentral.com. There, rowing enthusiasts can view complete event schedules with entries, along with all of the day's results.

GIVING BACK: The Bearcats had a busy preseason as they held an erg-a-thon fund-raiser in late September. For a 24 hour period, members of the UC roster rowed continuously in an effort to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research. At the end of the event, the Bearcats had raised $1,000 for the Breast Cancer Alliance of Cincinnati.
