IOWA CITY, Iowa---Jessica Beebe and Elizabeth Tremblay helped Cincinnati to a pair of top-five finishes as the University of Cincinnati rowing team opened its 2006-07 season on Sunday at the Head of the Iowa Regatta.
Beebe and Tremblay earned a fifth-place finish in pairs competition with a time of 12:45.29, and then helped the Bearcats open eight crew cross the finish line in fifth later in the day. The open eight crew recorded a time of 15:00.92, just one second back of Minnesota in a close finish. In addition to Beebe and Tremblay, the crew consisted of coxswain Liz Johnson, Sarah White, Emily Knaus, Stephanie Celek, Lindsey Kemna, Jodie Lush and Megan Peters.
"I am very encouraged with the team's performance this weekend," UC head coach Pam Mork said. "The team is really showing great maturity in the way they raced. We raced alot of boats this weekend and each boat had places that could improve, but they are really making strides that I want to see."
Celek was also in the midst of another top-10 finish as she joined with Lisa Teague to end up eighth in pairs action at 13:06.63. The open four race was a good one for the Bearcats, as they finished in sixth (16:18.05) and 10th (16:33.14).
"I think our second varsity eight had a noteworthy performance with a 15th place finish," Mork continued. "One of the wheels on a seat broke and they rowed with really only six people and still be half the field. Kudos to them for still having a great performance. The first varisty eight improved over last weekend, but still have some work to do too." The Bearcats will continue their fall season next Sunday at the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, Tenn.
