PROVIDENCE, R.I.---University of Cincinnati freshman Jaime Frey has been recognized for her record breaking performance over the weekend as she was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week. Frey was a key defensive contributor to the Bearcats' weekend wins over Notre Dame and DePaul.
In UC's two weekend matches, Frey (Cincinnati, Ohio/Roger Bacon) averaged an astounding 8.67 digs per game. She played the best game of her short career in UC's first-ever win over Notre Dame, recording a career-high and shattering a school record with 33 digs in three games. She added 19 digs a day later in the Bearcats victory over DePaul.
Since taking over the starting libero job early this season, Frey has become one of the BIG EAST's top ranked players in digs per game, averaging 4.95. She has been even better in league play, topping 20 digs in six of 10 BIG EAST matches and averaging 6.14 per game.
The award continues a successful run of BIG EAST accolades for the Bearcats this season, as UC now has been recognized with three weekly awards. Jessica Elley was named player of the week on Sept. 4 and Jessie Nevitt received the same award on Oct. 9.
Cincinnati is in the midst of a huge week, with a trio of matches on the docket. The Bearcats face regional rival Dayton on Tuesday night in Fifth Third Arena at 7:30 p.m. UC then travels to Pittsburgh for an important league match-up on Friday night and wraps up the week at West Virginia on Sunday.
