SETTING THE SCENE: Cincinnati concludes the fall portion of its 2006-07 men's golf schedule this weekend, competing at the BIG EAST/Mid-American Conference Challenge in Winter Garden, Fla. The second annual event, hosted by Marquette, will take place at the Orange County National Golf Center on Nov. 4-5. UC will be trying to wrap up a successful fall season that has seen the Bearcats place in the top-10 in all five of its events.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The 12-team BIG EAST/MAC Challenge will take place beginning on Saturday, Nov. 4 at the Orange County National Golf Center in Winter Garden, Fla. The 54-hole, two-day tournament will be hosted for the second consecutive year by Marquette. The field, with its Golfweek team rankings, includes Cincinnati (211), Connecticut (209), DePaul (160), Marquette (99), Seton Hall (198), St. John's (177), USF (93) and Villanova (231) from the BIG EAST, along with Akron (97), Bowling Green (181), Northern Illinois (185) and Ohio (186) of the MAC. UC will try to better its 10th place performance in the inaugural edition of the event in 2005.
THE LINE-UP: The Bearcats will go with the same line-up utilized in the past two tournaments, beginning with senior Geoff Newman. Newman was been steady this year, posting a trio of top-10s and leading the team with a 73.5 average. Fellow senior Joe Young is coming off his best performance of the season, with two rounds of 71 and a 15th place finish at the F&M Bank Intercollegiate. The senior duo will be joined by junior Alex Wenzel and sophomores Albert Fernandez and Paul Marshall at this weekend's event.
LEADING THE WAY: The unquestioned leader and top player for the Bearcats this fall has been senior Geoff Newman. In five tournaments, Newman has finished in the top-20 four times, with a pair of top-five tallies to his credit. The Cincinnati native holds a team-best 73.5 average and has twice registered the squad's lowest round of the season with a 70.
LAST TIME OUT: Alex Wenzel shot a round of 72 and Joe Young earned a top-20 finish as the Bearcats wrapped up play at the F&M Bank Intercollegiate. When the dust had settled on the 54-hole tournament, Cincinnati was tied for seventh in the team standings. Young ended the event as the top finishing Bearcat as a final round 75 gave him a score of 217 for the tournament and a tie for 15th overall. Paul Marshall was next, tied for 22nd after a third round 73. Wenzel finished tied for 39th with teammate Geoff Newman at 225.
