CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---The University of Cincinnati rowing team wrapped up its last competitive event of the fall season in style, scoring three top-10 finishes on Saturday at the Head of the Hooch Regatta. The event attracted 135 rowing organizations from across the country and closes UC's fall schedule. The Bearcats will hold their intrasquad class races next weekend.
In the championship eight race, Cincinnati's first crew, led by coxswain Liz Johnson, crossed the finish line sixth in a time of 16:09.6. The boat was comprised of Sarah White, Lisa Teague, Elizabeth Tremblay, Jessica Beebe, Stephanie Celek, Emily Knaus, Jodie Lush and Megan Peters. Only four schools placed in front of the Bearcats as Tennessee swept the top two spots in front of crews from Central Florida, Clemson and SMU. A total of 27 crews made up the championship eight race field, with the Bearcats finishing in front of quality programs from Duke, North Carolina, Kansas and regional rival Indiana.
"This is just a wonderful way to go into our winter training period," an elated Pam Mork stated. "Today's performance gives our girls so much enthusiasm and excitement to carry into the spring. The results from today show the growing depth that we are building. To have our top two boats seperated by only 21 seconds is a very close margin. I am so proud of our team for their effort today."
UC also enjoyed a great day in the novice eight race, placing two boats in the top-eight, among the 24 entries. The Bearcats boat of coxswain Courtney Knudsen, Kara Stricker, Shannon Leary, Jackie Sander, Catherine Wiley, Elizabeth Cola, Caitlin Dohlen, Anna Hallett and Leah Beard stopped the clock in 18:28.4. UC also finished eighth in the novice eight race.
The Bearcats' intrasquad class races will take place on the Little Miami River next Saturday, Nov. 11.
