SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati faces High Point in the final game of the Jim Thorpe Association Classic on Sunday, Nov. 12 at Fifth Third Arena. Game time is 7 p.m. UC has won its first two games of the round-robin tournament, defeating Howard, 79-39, and Tennessee-Martin, 67-49, and is the only remaining unbeaten team in the tourney. A win over High Point would give the Bearcats sole possession of the tourney title. High Point is 1-1, losing to Tennessee-Martin, 64-61 on Friday but rebounding with an 81-62 win over Howard on Saturday.
SECOND OF TWO: The Cincinnati-High Point game will be the second of two contests in Sunday's final round of the Jim Thorpe Classic. Tennessee-Martin and Howard will play in the 4:30 p.m. first game.
STORY LINES:
Sunday's game will be the first-ever meeting between Cincinnati and High Point. The Panthers are one of two first-time opponents on the 2006-07 UC schedule. Central Michigan, whom the Bearcats host on Nov. 25, is the other.
Cincinnati has made 20 steals in its first two games.
The Bearcats will seek improvement in their shooting from both the field and the foul line. Cincinnati has shot just .409 in its first two games, .264 from 3-point range. The Bearcats have shot .550 at the foul line. Last season, UC set a school record for free throw shooting percentage, shooting .747.
Though he does not start, freshman Deonta Vaughn is leading the team in assists with 11 in UC's first two games.
NOTING THE JIM THORPE TOURNAMENT GAMES
Marcus Sikes celebrated his 22nd birthday on Saturday by recording the Bearcats' first double-double of the season in the win over Tennessee-Martin. The 6-8 junior had 18 points and 10 rebounds vs. Tennessee-Martin. He was 3-of-6 from 3-point range and is UC's top 3-point shooter, sinking 5-of-8 from behind the arc.
John Williamson became the first Bearcat to top the 20-point mark this season, scoring 23 points vs. Tennessee-Martin on 8-of-11 shooting from the field.
UC scored 28 point in the paint in Saturday's game.
The 39 points scored by Howard in Friday's win was the fewest allowed by the Bearcats since an 89-37 victory over Southern Miss. on Feb. 15, 2002.
Mick Cronin became the 18th UC head coach out of 26 to record a victory in his Bearcats coaching debut on Friday.

The Bearcats upped their record in season openers to 87-19. UC has won 25 of its last 26 season openers. The Bearcats had a streak of 21 season opener victories snapped in 2001-02 with a loss at Oklahoma State.
