Cincinnati's record-breaking 3-point performance propelled the Bearcats to an 89-65 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Tuesday at Fifth Third Arena in UC's home opener. The Bearcats extended their home-opening winning streak to 11 games. With the win UC improves to 2-0 on the season.
"Tonight we were a bigger, stronger team," said UC head coach Laurie Pirtle. "We had a lot of different looks and we made good adjustments at halftime."
Senior Karen Twehues led the Bearcats with 15 points. Sophomore Jill Stephens added 14 points and four rebounds, and freshman Carla Jacobs contributed 13 points and three assists.
UC finished the night with 13 treys - including 10 in the first half - setting the Cincinnati record for 3-pointers in a game. The Bearcats eclipsed the old mark of 12, set on March 5, 2004 against Houston. Sophomore Kahla Roudebush's triple with 10:22 left in the game, put UC in the record books.
UAPB (0-2) made the first basket of the contest for a 2-0 lead, the only advantage it would enjoy all night. The Bearcats went on a tear, shooting 58 percent from the floor, including 77 percent from behind the arc, to take an insurmountable 51-24 lead at the half. UC was unconscious from 3-point range in the first nine minutes of the game, draining 80 percent (8-of-10) from downtown and flying to a 29-11 lead.
"We got some easy looks in the first half. Our emphasis is our defense," said Pirtle. "We had a lot of good stops which lead to those easy looks."
Three UC players scored in double figures by the first half. Twehues couldn't miss, converting all four of her 3-point attempts, and led UC with 12 points. Sophomore Jill Stephens and freshman Carla Jacobs scored 10 points each in the first stanza. The Bearcats were just as impressive on defense, creating 12 turnovers - which UC capitalized on for 18 points - and holding the Lady Lions to 29 percent shooting.
Sophomore Angel Morgan tied a career-high with eight points. She also scored eight in Cincinnati's win over Youngstown State.
Junior Emy Ogide tied her career-high with nine rebounds. She added 7 points.
All 11 Bearcats played in the game and nine got in the scoring column.
UC distributed the ball well with 23 assists. Sophomores Shelly Bellman and Roudebush led the way with four assists.
The Bearcats had 41 boards to the Lions' 30.
The Bearcats play host to University of Dayton Thursday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Fifth Third Arena. UC has a 22-21 all time record against the Flyers.
