SETTING THE SCENE: The Bearcats hope to continue their winning ways and improve to 3-0, and disrupt Dayton's two-game winning streak when UC hosts the Flyers Thursday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. at Fifth Third Arena . The Bearcats are back in action just two nights after trouncing Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 89-65, on Tuesday. UC improved to 2-0, while the Flyers (2-1) have just one loss, coming in their first game of the season to BIG EAST member Louisville in the Cardinal Classic. The Bearcats own a slight edge in the all-time series against UD, leading 22-21, but have won the last six encounters. The 43 times the two teams have squared off is only rivaled by UC's series with Louisville which has encompassed 55 games.
HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS: The Flyers, are the second contest of UC's four-game home stand. UC hosts two more games at Fifth Third WITH St. Francis (Pa.) on Nov. 22 and Murray State on Nov. 28. The Bearcats have won five consecutive times when battling UD at Fifth Third Arena. The last time UD snuck a win away from the Queen City was Jan. 13, 1995, a 60-56 win for the Flyers.
A LOOK AT UD: The University of Dayton squad is one on the rise. In only three seasons, the Flyers went from being a 3-25 team in 2003-04, to winning 17 games last year. Like the Bearcats, they are currently on a two-game winning streak, with victories claimed at the Cardinal Classic in Louisville, Ky. over Memphis, 96-71, and Wintrhop. 55-42. UD is averaging 68.3 points, while holding opponents under 65. Senior Jennifer Strong is pacing the Flyers with a 12.3 clip. Junior Brittany Holterman is also scoring in double figures at 10.3 ppg.
UC LAST TIME OUT: The Bearcats put up big numbers against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and broke a UC team record for 3-point field goals in a game. UC won soundly, 89-65, in their home opener over the Lions, extending its home-opener winning streak to 11 in a row. UC finished the night with 13 treys - including 10 in the first half - setting the Cincinnati record for 3-pointers in a game. The Bearcats eclipsed the old mark of 12, set on March 5, 2004 against Houston.
· Sophomore Angel Morgan tied a career-high with eight points. She also scored eight in Cincinnati's win over Youngstown State.
· Junior Emy Ogide tied her career-high with nine rebounds. She added 7 points.
· All 13 Bearcats played in the game and 11 got in the scoring column.
· UC distributed the ball well with 23 assists. Sophomores Shelly Bellman and Kahla Roudebush led the way with four assists. For Roudebush the four assists are a career-high.
· In UC's home openers the Bearcats are 24-12 overall and 14-7 during head coach Laurie Pirtle's watch.
· With the start against YSU, Carla Jacobs was one of nine true freshmen in the nation who started in their team's D-I women's basketball season opener. Jacobs is the first UC true freshman starting point guard since Jolinda Lewis who earned the job during the 1995-96 season. Jacobs averaged 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 6.0 assists per exhibition game. She broke loose for 13 points against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
ON THE BRINK OF MILESTONES: Head coach Laurie Pirtle entered the 2006-07 season five wins shy of 300 victories at UC. She needed 22 to reach the 400-win milestone as she entered the 25th season of her career. The winningest UC women's basketball coach has won eight coach of the year honors during her career.
