CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Kenny Belton, who helped Dudley High School in Greensboro, N.C. to the Class 3A state championship last season, has signed a national letter-of-intent to continue his basketball and academic career at the University of Cincinnati.
Belton, a 6-8, 245-pound forward, averaged 14.8 points and 8.2 rebounds as a junior last season in helping Dudley to a 26-4 record and its second consecutive state title. He was named the most valuable player of the Eastern Regional of the tournament.
"Kenny is an unbelievable young man," stated UC head coach Mick Cronin. "He is the ultimate student-athlete. He is 6-foot-8 and 245 pounds and has a 3.4 GPA. He is everything you would want in a recruit as far as size, strength and attitude, to go along with a tremendous work ethic.
"He is a very physical player who will continue to develop throughout his four years at Cincinnati," Cronin added. "We're extremely pleased to have him join the Bearcats."
Belton, whose play was hindered for part of last season due to injury, was invited to NBA Players Camp and the adidas Super Star Camp last summer.
Originally from Salem, Va., Belton moved to Greensboro after his sophomore year. Dudley is the high school alma mater of recent Bearcats standout Eric Hicks, the rebounding and shot-blocking leader on last year's team who is now playing in Europe.
While at Salem, Belton was named the Timesland Sizzlin' Sophomore after averaging 14.3 points and 8.1 rebounds and shot 52 percent from the field.
Belton joins two other high school seniors to sign with Cincinnati during the early signing period, Larry Davis, a 6-3 guard at Alief-Hastings High in Houston and Rashad Bishop, a 6-5 forward from Newark, N.J. playing at St. Benedict's Prep.
