    Day

    November 22, 2006

Winter break is not far off! Today (Wednesday) is actually the last day of classes for us this week, and then we have the rest of the week off for Thanksgiving. I'll be going home and my sister and her puppy are coming into town and I can't wait because I have not seen her for months. When we come back from Thanksgiving break, we have our last official week of school and following that is exam week. Of course after exam week we will have our winter break and that marks the end of fall quarter. This quarter has flown by. A lot of times people ask me if it is hard to play soccer when we are in-season and to keep up with school work, but I think school goes by faster when you are in-season actually.

Next quarter we will be focusing more on lifting, speed/agilities, and plyometrics to get us ready for next season. We have already started doing some of this with Curtis in the new weight room. In fact, yesterday when we were there we did some testing so that later - at the end of winter quarter - we can see how much we have improved... so today we are all a little sore!!

We will also have occasional practices with the ball during the wintertime, but not as many practices as we had this quarter while in-season (due to NCAA rules). With all our new facilities, we will probably be able to get some practices indoors as well, which will be convenient when it gets really cold.

This past weekend was an exciting weekend here at UC because of the huge UC football victory....if you have not heard about this I have no idea what you have been doing! Maybe it had something to with the Bearcat Growl I came up with last week? Probably not, but still, I think this weekend (and tonight) more victories are to come for the women's basketball team, the men's basketball team, and the football team, and I'm always right so that's a good sign.

    Happy Day,

    Bengals Bearcats Growl

Today I went to the Bengals game...and after that I decided to borrow their touchdown song and change it to this:

    Hear that BEARCAT growlin'

    mean and angryyy
    Here he comes a prowlin'

    lean and hungryyy
    An offensive brute
    Run, pass or boot
    And defensively he's rough! tough!
    BEARCATS
That's the team we're going to cheer to vic-tor-y
    Touchdown BEARCATS

get some points upon that board
    And win a game for

It may be surprising, but sometimes I think that this year, as a sophomore, I've had more new experiences and opportunities than I did last year. On October 26, I went to the Legion of Excellence dinner, which was just as amazing as everyone told me it would be. It was a great experience because I was able to meet some student athletes from other sports that I really had not spent that much time with, but also I was able to be introduced to alumni that were being honored that night, too.

One alumna was a former diver named Angie Trostel. She was a nine-time All-American and almost made the diving team which I found very impressive! Her acceptance speech after she was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame was one-of-a-kind because she was passionate, thankful, and frank when recalling her experience at UC.

First, she introduced herself and right after apologized for being what she described as a not-so-great public speaker... but I thought her speech was so sincere and was one of the most memorable speeches I've ever heard...and I have heard a lot of speeches, haha. I felt proud to be a part of a university and athletic program that she had also been a part of.

The best way for me to really describe the night, was that basically I was just impressed with everything and everyone...which is very descriptive, I know. There was Dr. Candace Kendle, who was an honoree for the Order of the Black Blazer. She founded Kendle (her last name haha), which is a company in the pharmaceutical industry. It is actually one of the world's biggest clinical research companies. She got her Bachelor of Science and doctorate degrees in pharmacy from , as you may have guessed. She has been named one of the nation's top 25 female CEOs and also is a director for the Heinz Company. I love ketchup so this was huge for me.

Elliot Hilsinger was also honored and I liked his story because ever since he was a little he had attended Bearcat football games, and he still goes to football and basketball games today. He graduated from the and owns some La-Z-Boy Furniture stores. When I heard this I almost screamed out of excitement because I am a huge fan of those chairs you can recline in.

Also this year, I am lucky enough to have some professors with a lot of experience when it comes to journalism. One of my professors is Byron McCauley, and he is the Associate Editorial Editor at the Cincinnati Enquirer. Also, Professor Florez who teaches my ethics class has so many stories since she used to work with the News Record, the Enquirer and is a mediator in the Hamilton Country Common Pleas Court.

Remember to check back in soon....
