OXFORD, Ohio -- The Cincinnati women's swimming team posted seven event victories to earn a fifth place finish at the Miami Invitaional in the Corwin Nixon Natatorium on Nov. 30 to Dec. 2. The men posted six top-four finished to place seventh.
The host RedHawks won the women's meet with 1873.5 points. They were followed by Truman State (1452.5), Denison (1200), Oakland (1159.5) and the Bearcats (1044).
Denison won the men's meet with 1779.5 points, followed by Oakland (1477), Wright State (1218) and Emory (1183). MU placed fifth, ahead of Cleveland State and UC.
Senior Gerdien de Jong was the top scorer for the Bearcats, winning the 50 (23.72) and 100 free (50.87) and placing second in the 200 free (1:52.32). She also swam the first leg of the 400 free relay team that placed first in a school-record time of 3:23.95. Following de Jong on the relay team were Alex Doyle, sister Ellie de Jong, and Randi Vogel. They broke the record of 3:24.91 set in 2000 by a team that included the eldest de Jong sister, Marein.
UC also won the 800 free and 400 medley relays. Doyle finished second in both of de Jong's wins.
Randi Vogel finished first in the 100 back (56.58) and was second in the 200 back (2:02.12).
For the men, Marcel Kleiner was the lone event winner, taking the 100 free in 45.43 seconds. The 200 medley relay team (1:32.05) also finished first.
