CINCINNATI, Ohio---Earlier this fall, the world learned how good of a coach Janet Carl is, as the University of Cincinnati mentor was named the LPGA National Coach of the Year. Now, everyone is about to find out what kind of player Carl is as she is set to compete in the LPGA Civil Cup this week in Nevada and Arizona.
By virtue of winning the Coach of the Year award, Carl will now join many of her coaching and teaching colleagues in a 36-hole competition, dubbed the Civil Cup presented by Ketel One vodka. The event will tee off on Monday at the El Rio Country Club in Mojave Valley, Ariz. The following day, Carl and her partner Becky O'Hara will move across the stateline, playing 18 holes at the Mojave Resort Golf Course in Laughlin, Nev.
"I am a little bit nervous about teeing it up competitively," says Carl, who notes that she hasn't played a competitive round of golf since June 2005. "My players have been giving me lots of good advice on playing. I guess they must have learned something from me. The girls are so excited about this, it's just funny how the roles have been reversed with this."
The format for the tournament will put regional bragging rights on the line as the East will take on the West. Carl will play for the West team which is comprised of teaching professionals from the Central, Midwest and Western sections of the United States. The East team is made up of the Northeast and Southeast sections as determined by the LPGA.
Full results from the Civil Cup will be available by logging onto the official website of the Ladies Professional Golf Association, www.LPGA.com.
