Cincinnati, Ohio--The University of Cincinnati football team finished its first week of bowl game preparation on Saturday morning.

"I am really pleased with the first week of practice in terms of the team's attitude," said head coach Brian Kelly. "They were excited to be out here all week."

Kelly excused the senior class of 14 players from practice and used the scheduled 90 minutes of practice working exclusively with the underclassmen.

Kelly added, "To be able to get the system of the offense and the defense in now was very important. Next week, we'll be ready to prepare and install the gameplan for Western Michigan."

Having utilized six of their alloted 15 practices prior to the inaugural International Bowl, the Bearcats enjoy three days away from football before returning to Nippert Stadium.

"We allowed our seniors to get home early and enjoy the holiday," stated Kelly. "Today, we scrimmaged with a lot of our younger guys today. It allowed us to evaluate our football team and underscores the importance of bowl practice in the development and how it serves as a springboard for the future."

"In three years, the Bearcats will have won the Big East..." Matt Hayes, Sporting News
The Sporting News' Matt Hayes continues to tout UC for the hiring of Brian Kelly. In the Dec. 29, 2006 issue that features Sportsman of the Year LaDainian Tomlinson on the cover, Hayes lists UC's Kelly as the Best Hire of the college football season.

Cincinnati continues to prepare for their Jan. 6 matchup in the inaugural International Bowl against Western Michigan. Kickoff from Rogers Centre (formerly SkyDome) is slated for 12:00 noon on ESPN2.
