- The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team has added five student-athletes to its roster for the 2006 season. Patrick Baxter, Scott Kunze, and Alexander Marello have each signed national letters of intent and will join transfer Joevannie Peart and Paul Hoste to continue their academic and athletic careers at UC in the fall of 2006.
"We are pleased and excited to add these five student-athletes to our program," head coach Hylton Dayes said. "We feel that they address some of our immediate needs and will also add depth to the team. They are all excellent soccer players, good students and of good character, which are important elements as we move forward in the BIG EAST."
Baxter, a 5-8 forward/midfielder, was a NJCAA and NSCAA All-American as a sophomore at after leading the nation in scoring with 27 goals and 27 assists for 81 points. The , , native scored 53 goals and dished out 42 assists in 34 matches during his two seasons at . Baxter set a school record with 40 goals as a senior at and was named all-conference, all-city and all-state. The son of Andy Baxter and Donna Grunenberg, he plans to major in business.
Kunze, a 5-10 midfielder/defender, was a four-year starter at , scoring 21 goals and adding 28 assists during his career. He participatd in the Adidas ESP camp in the summer of 2005, which featured the top 150 high school players in the country. A two-time team MVP and a third team All-Greater Cleveland selection as a senior, Kunze was a two-year member of the Ohio Olympic Development Program state team. The son of Duane and Deb Kunze, he will major in mechanical engineering.
Marello, a 5-7 midfieler, played for the U-17 Canadian National Team and has played in exhibition matches for the U-20 Canadian National team. The Barnaby, B.C., native was a five-year member of the British Columbia Provincial team. He led his Burnaby Royals club team to a Canadian National U-18 Championship. The son of Mimmo and Debbie Marrello, he is undecided on a major.
Peart, a 6-3 forward/defender, is a transfer from junior college. The Missassauga, , native was a four-year letterwinner at . The son of Annie Peart, he joined the team in the fall quarter, and is majoring in criminal justice.
Hoste is a 5-10 midfielder from He led De La Salle High School to the 2005 state championship while being named all-league, all-region and all-state. A four-year member of the Michigan Olympic Development Program state team, Hoste led his club team, , to one state cup championship. The son of Richard and Colleen Hoste, he will major in industrial design.
"We are still in the recruiting process and we'll add a few more players to complete our recruiting class," Dayes said.
