CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The University of Cincinnati tennis team opened 2007 with a 4-3 win over Bowling Green on Friday night at the Queen City Racquet Club. It was the dual season opener for both teams.
The Bearcats were led by their newcomers, as three of their four points came from players in their first year on the team. The doubles tandem of senior Hannah Hinton and sophomore Elizabeth Young opened with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles, before freshman Rachel Owens and junior transfer Valeriya Dandik clinched the doubles point with an 8-6 win at the No. 1 spot.
In singles play, the teams split the six matches, allowing UC to come away with the victory. Stefanie Menoff and Kelsey Jakupcin earned straight-set victories at No. 6 and No. 4, winning 6-2, 6-0 and 6-4, 6-2, respectively. The Bearcats countered with three hard-fought wins.
Young defeated Andrea Volle at No. 5, 6-2, 7-5 and Dandik topped Jenna Nussbaum at No. 3, 7-6(4), 6-1.
Sam Kintzel defeated UC's Alizee Paradis, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2. The match of the day was at the top spot, as UC's freshman Owens outlasted senior Ashley Jakupcin, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(5).
UC is now off until Friday, Jan. 26, when it hosts Miami (Ohio) at Queen City at 7 p.m.
