WASHINGTON, D.C. - Cincinnati improved to 12-6 overall and got its third BIG EAST win with an 80-62 victory over Georgetown (11-9, 1-6 BIG EAST) on Tuesday at McDonough Arena. Treasure Humphries led the Bearcats with 18 points, while four UC players scored in double digits. Carla Jacobs tied a career-high with 15 points and dished out a career-high 10 assists to pick up her first career double-double.
got off to a slow start to open the first half and fell behind early but made up for it. The Bearcats used a 38-9 run and held the Hoyas scoreless for 12 minutes, vaulting to a 44-20 lead at the half. GU went 0-for-14 during the drought and the Bearcats forced 10 turnovers.
"When you go on the road you know the home team is going to come out and play well," said UC head coach Laurie Pirtle. "Our goal was to stick with our game plan and emulate what we do in practice."
UC seniors Humphries and Karen Twehues, who had started every game this season, came off the bench and led UC with 10 points each at the half. Twehues drained a 3-point field goal with 10:11 to put UC up for good. She was true for another trey with three seconds on the clock giving the Bearcats an insurmountable 44-20 lead at the break. Kieraah Marlow scored 12 of her team's 20 points in the opening stanza.
"I'm proud of Treasure and KT (Karen) for putting the team first," said Pirtle. "They played unselfishly and really gave us a spark off the bench."
UC widened its lead on an Angel Morgan lay up to open the first half. The Hoyas got as close as 15 points, but UC turned away their comeback attempt and going up by as many as 24 with 2:31 to play in the contest on a Jacobs' 3-pointer.
"We really played like we wanted to win," said Pirtle. "We're a talented young team and we just came to play today."
UC's bench outscored the Hoyas', 34-17, with 28 coming from the two seniors. The Bearcats also had 13 steals compared to 's 6. Morgan had a career-high four steals to go along with five points, five rebounds and five assists.
GU's Marlow led all scorers with 20 points and Meredith Cox added 10.
The Bearcats will host No. 17/18 on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m. at the Fifth Third Arena in a BIG EAST match up.
