CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The UC tennis team took a big step toward qualifying for this year's BIG EAST Championship when it defeated Rutgers, 5-2, at the Western Tennis and Fitness Club on Saturday evening. The win was UC's first over a BIG EAST foe since joining the league and upped its record to 3-2. The loss was the Scarlet Knight's first match of the season.
In doubles play, the Bearcats escaped with a 9-7 win at No. 2 by Rachel Owens and Jenny Rowen, but RU won the other two to gain a 1-0 edge.
To open singles, Owens earned a quick, 6-3, 6-2, win over Katherine Arlak at No. 2 to even the score. Rowen then topped Anela Dujsic, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 5 spot to give the Bearcats the lead. Lauren Edelschein evened the score at 2-2 with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Alizee Paradis at No. 3 singles.
It then came down to three, three-set matches, as it did in Friday night's match agianst Eastern Michigan. But unlike in Friday's loss, UC came up with the wins it needed on Saturday. Hannah Hinton at the top spot, Elizabeth Young at No. 4 and Jennifer Keiner at No. 6 all earned three-set victories to give UC the win.
UC is on the road next weekend, taking on Ball State on Friday, Feb. 9 at 3 p.m.
