CINCINNATI, Ohio---The list of awards and accolades for University of Cincinnati sophomore Jessie Nevitt continues to grow as she was named to the Collegiate Volleyball Update.com Stellar Spikers first team. The recognition for Nevitt places her in the company of some of the best players in the country.
CVU.com put together two seven-player teams with the idea of building a team with a starting line-up consisting of players that exhibited excellence and balance. In addition to statistical performance, contribution to the team's success was also taken into consideration.
"This is a great honor for Jessie and our program," UC head coach Reed Sunahara said. "She is in good company with players that played in the Final Four and are first team All-Americans. If Jessie can improve every year, she is going to get to the level of those players and I think she has all the tools to get there."
The 2006 season was another outstanding one for Nevitt (Kennesaw, Ga./Kennesaw Mountain) as she was named honorable mention All-American, first team All-Region and first team All-BIG EAST all for the second consecutive year. Nevitt led the BIG EAST in blocks per game with 1.68 and ranked second in hitting percentage at .367. Among Nevitt's other accolades this season included being named BIG EAST Player of the Week twice, earning a spot on a pair of all-tournament teams and breaking multiple school single-match blocks records.
The BIG EAST had three other players earn honorable mention honors, including Ana Yartseva-Stewart of Louisville and Jamie Mueller and Kimberley Todd from Marquette.
Nevitt helped the Bearcats to a 22-7 record this fall and a tie for third place in the final BIG EAST standings.
