CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The University of Cincinnati's women's soccer team has received commitments from seven high school standouts to join the Bearcats for the 2007 season. Among the seven are two from Cincinnati and one from Northern Kentucky.
"We are excited to bring in this class of very talented players," said head coach Meridy Glenn. "This is a mature and motivated group of young women. They have the ability to score goals and cover a lot of ground defensively. They all have strong club and ODP experience."
From the Cincinnati area are Logan Ballinger from Seton High School, Shauna Smith out of Winton Woods and Emily Hebbeler of Notre Dame Academy. Ballinger was first team all-city last year and earned three all-league honors. "Logan will be an exciting player to see develop," said Glenn. "She is very aggressive in front of the net and can play up top or in the midfield."
Smith set Winton Woods' records with 67 career goals and 159 career points. She was named all-city twice and all-league four times. "Shauna is a naturally gifted one-on-one player," commented Glenn. "Her excellent athletic ability will be a constant threat to our opponents."
Hebbeler was named all-region by the NSCAA after setting a Notre Dame record with 23 goals in a season and 52 in her career. She was named all-state and a Cincinnati Enquirer All-Star the last two years. As a sophomore, she scored the winning goal in overtime as NDA became the first boys or girls soccer team from Northern Kentucky to win a state championship. "Emily will be one of our best young finishers," said Glenn. "She has an excellent knack for getting free and finding the net."
Also committing to the Bearcats was Vanessa Hardin from Westerville (OH) Central High School. She earned three all-conference and all-district honors while scoring 56 career goals. "Without question, Vanessa will provide strength and pure speed to our offense," said Glenn. "She has a tremendous work ethic."
From Prospect, Ky. and Ballard High School is Ellen Parker. She was twice named honorable mention all-state and totaled 48 goals and 42 assists in her career. "Ellen is a natural leader," commented Glenn. "She reads the game exceptionally well and will help us in the midfield or on the backline."
Kendall Loggins was a two-time all-conference and all-section selection at Naperville North (IL) High School. She was named one of the top five midfielders from the Chicago-area by the Chicago Sun Times. "Logan is a smooth and confident player who will bring size and National pool experience to our backline or midfield," said Glenn.
The lone defender in the class is Camille Royer from Spring, Texas. She has not played high school soccer for three years, but helped her club teams to six state titles and has been a member of state ODP teams for three years. "Camille is a feisty, tenacious, left-footed defender who is able to connect with the right player to start the attack," said Glenn.
The spring season for UC opens on February 25, when the Bearcats host Wright State at Gettler Stadium at 5 p.m.
