SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati women's golf team opens the second half of it's 2006-07 season when it competes in the Baja Invitational in Baja, Mexico on Feb. 12-13. The Bearcats will be out to build on a successful fall campaign that featured two tournament titles and a dual win over Northern Kentucky. The two-day event south of the border kicks off a seven-event spring campaign for the Bearcats.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The 2007 Baja Invitational will be played over two days at the Bajamar Resort in Baja, Mexico. Action gets underway on Monday (Feb. 12) with 36 holes of play. One day later the champions will be crowned after the final 18 holes. Northern Illinois, ranked 135th in the latest Golfweek rankings will serve as tournament hosts. The balance of the 13-team field with Golfweek rankings, features Anderson College (N/A), Cincinnati (95), Detroit (172), Eastern Illinois (162), Eastern Kentucky (169), Eastern Michigan (66), Portland State (129), Southern Miss (181), Toledo (97), Texas-San Antonio (145), Wichita State (128) and Winthrop (115). Nebraska is the defending champion of the event, having topped BYU by five strokes last year.
THE LINE-UP: The Bearcats will send their normal line-up to Mexico, starting with a two-time winner this year, Hillery Wilson. The junior leads the team with a 74.8 average. Junior Allison Mayborg is in the number two spot, just ahead of sophomore Marianne Erb. Senior Sarah Bires and sophomore Sarah Stamper make up the balance of coach Janet Carl's line-up.
SHARING THE WEALTH: While Hillery Wilson has been the big winner for the Bearcats over the past two years, Allison Mayborg and Sarah Stamper got in the act at the Cross River Shootout vs. Northern Kentucky on Sept. 29. The UC duo shared the individual medalist award with scores of 75, marking the first win for both players in the college ranks.
HOPING FOR MORE: Through just over two seasons at Cincinnati, junior Hillery Wilson has already accomplished a great deal. As a Bearcat, Wilson has won seven tournaments, set the school record for lowest round and the mark for lowest single-season average. She is enjoying another great season this year, holding a team-best 74.8 average and matching her own school record with a round of 69 at the Lady Irish Invitational. On the strength of her win at the Lady Irish Invitational (Sept. 23-24), Wilson is ranked 141st nationally by Golfweek. Last fall, Golfweek tabbed Wilson as one of the nation's five players to keep an eye on.
