Two Records Broken on Final Day of BIG EAST Championships

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. -- The Cincinnati swimming and diving teams set a pair of school records on the final day of the 2007 BIG EAST Championships at the Nassau County Aquatics Center on Saturday. The men moved up two spots on the final day to place fifth, while the women finished eighth.

Bjorn Mates broke the UC record in the 200 back in both the prelims and finals, breaking Honza Vitazka's 10-year old mark of 1:47.03. Mates swam a 1:46.87 in the prelims and then 1:46.88 in the finals to place third. The times were also NCAA 'B' qualifiers.

The women's 400 free relay team of Gerdien de Jong, Alex Doyle, Elinore de Jong and Randi Vogel bettered the record they set earlier this year, placing fourth in 3:22.51, also an NCAA 'B' time. Vogel also finished fourth in the 200 back in 2:02.15.

In the 100 free, Marcel Kleiner posted his third top-four finish of the Championships, placing third in 44.94. Josh Schneider posted his third top 10 finish of the meet, placing ninth in 45.08. Kleiner and Schneider also swam two legs of the 400 free relay team that finished fourth in a season-best 3:00.61.
