CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Cincinnati tennis team saw its four-match winning streak come to an end when it was edged by West Virginia, 4-3, at Queen City Racquet Club on Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats fell to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the BIG EAST with the loss, while WVU is now 6-4, 2-0.
The doubles point turned out to be the difference, and the Mountianeers fought their way to a sweep of the three matches. Stacey Percival and Natalia Prinz topped Hannah Hinton and Jenny Rowen, 9-7, at No. 1 and Gabriela Blaskovicova and Stephanie LaFortune beat Rachel Owens and Elizabeth Young in a tie-breaker at No. 3.
The singles matches were also a battle. Lyskawa at No. 3 and Ashley Constantine at No. 5 earned relatively easy wins for WVU. UC responded with Hinton's 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 over Prinz and a 7-5, 6-1 victory by Owens at No. 2 over Percival. The last two matches were three-setters. Rowen beat LaFortune at No. 4, 6-4, 0-6, 7-5, to even the match. In the tightest match if the day, No. 6 singles, Alexandra Kaluza edged Young, 6-3, in the third set after they split the first two by 6-4 scores.
