CINCINNATI, Ohio---On the strength of a brilliant weekend at the plate and on the basepaths, University of Cincinnati junior Tony Campana has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, along with earning one of Collegiate Baseball's National Player of the Week awards. Campana helped the Bearcats win two of three at North Carolina A&T.
For the week, Campana (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) hit .533 (8-for-15), but did most of his damage once he reached base. In four contests, Campana stole 12 bases in 14 attempts, including a school record six in the second game of a doubleheader at North Carolina A&T. Campana also scored seven runs, drove in another and walked six times, finishing the week with a .667 on-base percentage.
Campana becomes Cincinnati's first BIG EAST Player of the Week for 2007 and the first Bearcat to earn the award since Jon DeLuca on April 3, 2006. The last UC player to earn national honors was Joe List, who was named the Baseball Weekly National Player of the Week in 2002.
The Bearcats (3-5) open the home portion of their 2007 schedule this weekend, hosting Dartmouth in a three-game series. The weekend slate kicks off with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
