CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Sarah Bires and Jake Richards seniors on women's golf and men's track and field teams, has been named the recipients of the seventh annual Jean Stephens Memorial Award.
The award annually recognizes a UC student-athlete who demonstrates commitment to team, department and the University. Sue Stephens, sister of the late assistant to the athletics director, was on hand for the presentation at the men's basketball home game vs. Seton Hall on Feb. 28.
A four-year member of the women's golf team, Bires participates competes on the links in both the fall and spring golf seasons. The Martinsville, Ind. product has found time to perform service in the community as an active member of C-PAWS -- UC's service honorary of student-athletes -- where she is currently serving as an officer. Recognized on the National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team in 2006, Bires is currently serving as a represetative on the University's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). She is majoring in early childhood education.
In his fifth year with the men's track and field program, Richards competes in both the 800- and 1,500-meter runs. A full Cincinnatus Scholarship recipient, he was co-president of C-PAWS in 2005-06. A member of the University's SAAC, Richards has been awarded the Men of Metro Service Honorary. Richards is a secondary education major.
The recipient of the Jean Stephens Award is selected by a committee of faculty, athletics department staff, and student representatives and a permanent plaque honoring the recipients is located in Fifth Third Arena.
