SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati men's golf team opens the second half of its 2006-07 schedule, traveling to Jackson, Tenn. for the annual Grover Page Classic, hosted by Tennessee-Martin. When last on the links, the Bearcats shot a season-best round of 284 at the BIG EAST/MAC Challenge in November. The 54-hole, two-day tournament gets underway on Monday, March 5.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: A total of eight teams are confirmed for the Grover Page Classic, to be held on March 5-6 at the Jackson Country Club in Jackson, Tenn. Among the squads slated for competition are the Bearcats, host Tennessee-Martin and the defending champions, Murray State. Other squads slated to play include Kentucky Wesleyan, Lewis University, North Alabama and Union (Tenn.) University. Murray State took the top spot by nine strokes over North Alabama. The first 36 holes of the event will be played on Monday, with the final round taking place on Tuesday.
THE LINE-UP: As has been the case all season long, senior Geoff Newman and his team-leading 74.4 average will occupy the top spot in the Bearcats line-up. Sophomore Alberto Fernandez occupies the number two spot, just ahead of senior Joe Young. The final two slots this week will be occupied by junior Alex Wenzel and freshman Blake Tucker.
LEADING THE WAY: The unquestioned leader and top player for the Bearcats this season has been senior Geoff Newman. In six tournaments, Newman has finished in the top-20 four times, with a pair of top-five tallies to his credit. The Cincinnati native holds a team-best 74.4 average and has twice registered the squad's lowest round of the season with a 70.
SCHEDULE ADDITIONS: Since the conclusion of the fall portion of the season, Cincinnati has added three tournaments to its spring slate, including the Grover Page Classic. Other additions include the LaRosa's Collegiate Cup, hosted by Northern Kentucky on March 17-18, and IUPUI's Wolf Run Intercollegiate on April 15-16.
LAST TIME OUT: Cincinnati shot a season-best round of 284 to jump to ninth in the final standings at the BIG EAST/MAC Challenge which was played at the Orange County National Golf Center. The Bearcats used two rounds of 70 and three of 72 to make a jump from 12th in the final 18 holes. Alex Wenzel's sharp play at the tournament continued in the final round as he carded a 70 for the second time in three rounds. Wenzel finished tied for 16th with a final score of 220. Paul Marshall also enjoyed one of his best days of the fall, shooting a season-best 70 to claim 28th in the final rundown.
