SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati women's golf team continues its spring season, heading west this weekend (March 9-11) to take part in the highly competitive Rio Verde Invitational. The tournament, to be held in Rio Verde, Ariz. features eight of the top-100 teams ranked nationally by Golfweek. UC will be out to improve upon a 16th place finish at the tournament two seasons ago.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The Quail Run Course at the Rio Verde Country Club will be the site of the fifth annual Rio Verde Invitational this weekend, hosted by Western Michigan. A total of 18 holes will be played Friday-Sunday with a 1 p.m. MT start on Friday and a 8 a.m. beginning the following two days. The highly competitive field with Golfweek rankings includes: Arkansas-Little Rock (78), Ball State (152), Baylor (46), Bowling Green (169), Bradley (128), Cincinnati (109), Eastern Michigan (81), Illinois (104), Illinois State (101), Minnesota (121), Missouri State (76), Ohio (170), Southern Illinois (97), Texas Tech (86), Toledo (95), Western Michigan (119), Wisconsin (90) and Xavier (110). Northwestern is the defending champion of the event.
THE LINE-UP: The Bearcats will send their normal line-up to Arizona with one addition. Two-time winner this year Hillery Wilson leads the team with a 75.9 average and occupies the top spot. Sophomore Marianne Erb is in the number two spot, just ahead of junior Allison Mayborg. Senior Sarah Bires, sophomore Sarah Stamper and senior Mya Pronschinkse make up the balance of coach Janet Carl's line-up.
SHARING THE WEALTH: While Hillery Wilson has been the big winner for the Bearcats over the past two years, Allison Mayborg and Sarah Stamper got in the act at the Cross River Shootout vs. Northern Kentucky on Sept. 29. The UC duo shared the individual medalist award with scores of 75, marking the first win for both players in the college ranks.
HOPING FOR MORE: Through just over two seasons at Cincinnati, junior Hillery Wilson has already accomplished a great deal. As a Bearcat, Wilson has won seven tournaments, set the school record for lowest round and the mark for lowest single-season average. She is enjoying another great season this year, holding a team-best 75.9 average and matching her own school record with a round of 69 at the Lady Irish Invitational. With two wins and a pair of other top-10 finishes, Wilson is ranked 188th nationally by Golfweek. Last fall, Golfweek tabbed Wilson as one of the nation's five players to keep an eye on.
