CINCINNATI, Ohio---Cincinnati's success in winning BIG EAST Conference Baseball weekly awards continued as sophomore Steve Blevins was named the league's pitcher of the week on Monday. This marks the third consecutive week a member of the Bearcats' squad has been honored by the BIG EAST. In addition, senior Neall French was named to the league's weekly honor roll.
Blevins (Louisa, Ky./Lawrence County) helped Cincinnati get its sweep of Cleveland State off on the right foot as he hurled eight shutout innings in last Friday's series opener. In gathering his second consecutive victory, Blevins allowed the Vikings just four hits and a walk, while striking out five. Blevins has now surrendered just one earned run in his last 18 innings, spanning three starts.
French (Bay Village, Ohio/St. Ignatius) had a big week at the plate, hitting .429 and driving in nine runs. The senior had the best day of his collegiate career at Kentucky, hitting a pair of three-run homers for a career-high six RBI.
The award for Blevins marks the second straight pitcher of the week for the Bearcats after classmate Dan Osterbrock earned it last week. Two weeks ago, junior Tony Campana was tabbed as the BIG EAST Player of the Week.
The Bearcats, now winners of seven of their last nine and three straight, are back on the diamond this weekend, hosting Chicago State in a three-game set. Action gets underway at Marge Schott Stadium on Friday, with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
