SETTING THE SCENE: It will be a busy Spring Break for the University of Cincinnati men's golf team as it competes in two tournaments in a span of four days. UC hits the links locally at the LaRosa's Collegiate Cup, hosted by Northern Kentucky, beginning on Saturday (March 17). Two days later, the Bearcats will travel to Avon, Ind. to defend their title at the Butler Invitational.

ABOUT THE TOURNAMENTS: The first of UC's two tournaments of the week, the LaRosa's Collegiate Cup, will take place beginning on Saturday (March 17) at Eagle Creek Country Club in Crittendon, Ky. A total of 18 holes will be played each day. The field includes defending champ Northern Kentucky, which topped Bellarmine by 10 strokes last season. The latter is also included in this year's field. Other teams competing include the Bearcats, Kentucky Wesleyan, Lewis, Mercyhurst, Southern Indiana, SIU-Edwardsville and Thomas More.

Cincinnati will put its Butler Invitational team title on the line at the 2007 edition of the event which gets underway on Monday (March 19). The two-day, 36-hole tournament will be played at the Prestwick Country Club in Avon, Ind. Joining UC and Butler in the field are Cleveland State, IPFW, IUPUI, Oakland, Robert Morris and Wisconsin-Green Bay.

THE LINE-UP: The Bearcats will send a team of six players to Northern Kentucky, with all but one travelling on to Butler. Geoff Newman, the team leader in average at 74.3, will occupy the top spot for both tournaments, just ahead of Albert Fernandez. Joe Young, the medalist at last year's Butler Invitational, is in the third spot, with Alex Wenzel and Paul Marshall playing No. 4 and No. 5. Blake Tucker will join the group for the LaRosa's Collegiate Cup.

LEADING THE WAY: The unquestioned leader and top player for the Bearcats this season has been senior Geoff Newman. In seven tournaments, Newman has finished in the top-20 five times, with a pair of top-five tallies to his credit. The Cincinnati native holds a team-best 74.3 average and has twice registered the squad's lowest round of the season with a 70.
