It's Finals week and our team is focusing hard to defend our award from fall quarter. The women's golf team received the Highest Team GPA Award.

We returned from Rio Verde, Arizona this past Monday even though we did not want to leave the beautiful weather. Rio Verde is about 45 minutes east of Scottsdale. Sarah Bires, Allison Mayborg, Hillery Wilson and I traveled to this tournament two years ago and were very excited to come back. This is one of our favorite tournaments as we stay with host families in the community of Rio Verde. They are all so welcoming and excited to have us stay with them. Many of the families come out to watch us play, which means so much to have their support!

At this tournament many goals were accomplished. I made my goal of returning after surgery for my last senior golf season. I had ulnar nerve transposition surgery on my left arm done on January 18th. Dr. Wyrick, my surgeon, moved the nerve from my elbow to the top of my arm to release pressure. I had hit a tree root over a summer tournament and damaged the nerve; this caused me to lose feeling in the ring finger and pinky finger of my left hand. Surgery was a success and I now have complete feeling back to my fingers. The six weeks of therapy was very intense but I knew that I needed to work hard to come back. I am thankful that I was able to make a quick recovery and play out in Arizona.

Hillery also had a huge accomplishment at Rio Verde. On the final round on Sunday, she carded a 68, her lowest tournament round in college. She had previously shot two 69's at Notre Dame and Dayton but managed to make the putt on the last hole to shoot 68. We are all so proud of her accomplishment. She holds the women's record for the lowest tournament round here at UC.

Now we are preparing to leave for Spring Break tournaments down in Florida. Until then, "hit it straight and hit it far, hit in on the green and two putt for par!" (just a little cheer our team does after Marianne's pep talks).

We've had the first tournament of the spring season, and however frustrating it was, it was definitely great to get back on grass after five long months of hitting on Astroturf. On Monday and Tuesday, it was 60 and 65 degrees, sunny, and calm which was an awesome change from the late winter Cincinnati weather.

This week was finals week, and the NCAA doesn't allow official practices to be held from Sunday to Friday, but we're trying to play as much as we can between studying for tests. We leave for Northern Kentucky's tournament Friday afternoon, and straight from there, we go to Butler's tournament in Indiana, and we're looking forward to playing more on grass and making a statement in the region. The weather will be nasty this weekend for both tournaments, but it's nothing us Midwesterners aren't used to. We have been working the hardest we have as a program in the last three years, and we are looking forward to posting some good numbers.

Stay tuned.
