SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati women's golf team wraps up a busy Spring Break week, hosting its second tournament of the year, the Cincinnati Spring Invitational this weekend in Crystal River, Fla. The 36-hole, two-day tournament will be played at the Plantation Inn Golf Course and features 10 teams from the eastern half of the United States, along with the Swedish Amateur squad.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: A total of 10 teams will be on hand to try and capture the second annual Cincinnati Spring Invitational title. Illinois dominated the first edition of the event, winning by 24 shots over the Bearcats. The Fighting Illini, ranked 110th nationally by Golfweek will be on hand along with Cincinnati (111), Florida Atlantic (124), Middle Tennessee State (95), Princeton (41), Rutgers (206), the Swedish Amateur Team (N/A), UAB (161) and Yale (114).
THE LINE-UP: The line-up will be the same for the Bearcats as the one utilized at the USF-Waterlefe Invitational. Hillery Wilson, the 188th ranked player in the country holds the top spot, with Marianne Erb right behind. Sarah Bires will play No. 3, with Allison Mayborg and Sarah Stamper filling out the balance. Ashley Combs and Sarah Ryan will also compete as individuals.
SHARING THE WEALTH: While Hillery Wilson has been the big winner for the Bearcats over the past two years, Allison Mayborg and Sarah Stamper got in the act at the Cross River Shootout vs. Northern Kentucky on Sept. 29. The UC duo shared the individual medalist award with scores of 75, marking the first win for both players in the college ranks.
HOPING FOR MORE: Through just over two seasons at Cincinnati, junior Hillery Wilson has already accomplished a great deal. As a Bearcat, Wilson has won seven tournaments, set the school record for lowest round and the mark for lowest single-season average. She is enjoying another great season this year, holding a team-best 75.5 average. At the Rio Verde Invitational (March 9-11), Wilson broke her own school record and established a new tournament-best with a round of 68. With two wins and three other top-10 finishes, Wilson is ranked 188th nationally by Golfweek. Last fall, Golfweek tabbed Wilson as one of the nation's five players to keep an eye on.
UP NEXT: The Bearcats return home to co-host the UC/UD Invitational on April 2-3 at the Hueston Woods Golf Course in Oxford, Ohio.
