CINCINNATI, Ohio--Brian Kelly and the University of Cincinnati football team started Week 2 of the spring practice schedule with another day of outstanding weather at Nippert Stadium. UC worked a spirited two-hour session, spent 15 minutes working on a short field through the Red Zone, and finally used the last five minutes for live placekicking.
"We put some pressure on the kickers today," stated Kelly. "We worked on live situations, because we need to know who our kick will be."
The placekicking duel between Jacob Rogers and Joe Carithers began with point-after tries and moved back to 40-yarders. Both individuals showed accuracy, but Rogers' final kick split the uprights and went well into the north end zone seats for what would have been a fine souvenir for a fan sitting high in the 1530 Homer Section.
True to form, the Bearcats worked quickly during their Red Zone scrimmaging. A mix of rushing and passing concluded with a five-yard run to pay dirt by Butler Benton.
"We worked to install the Red Zone defense today," Kelly said. "We tried to give the quarterbacks a good look at what they would see during a game. Everything happens quicker close to the goal line. Today, we took another step in the process."
The Bearcats return to Nippert Stadium for their next practice on Wednesday afternoon.
