CINCINNATI, Ohio-- Winners of four of its last five matches entering the day, the University of Cincinnati women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 defeat at No. 60 Marshall.
Cincinnati (10-6) entered the afternoon having won four of its previous five matches, but Marshall proved too much on Saturday afternoon.
No. 60 Marshall (13-9) swept the singles competition and took all three doubles matches to claim the pairs point.
In the top singles bout, Kelli Shmitt topped Rachel Owens 6-2, 7-5. Karolina Soor dealt Jenny Rowen a 6-2, 6-1 defeat. In the third flight, Yulia Kashelkina won a hard fought match over Valeriya Dandik by scores of 6-2 and 7-5. Jessica Keener claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Alizee Paradis. In the fifth singles fray, Thaddea Lock won a 6-3, 6-4 decision against Elizabeth Young. In the final singles match, Anna Volkova needed a third-set tie-breaker to top Jennifer Keiner, 3-6, 6-3 and 10-7.
Marshall's duo of Shmitt and Soor defeated UC's top tandem of Hinton and Young by a score of 8-1. In the No. 2 doubles match it was the team of Keener and Kashelkina who handed the Bearcats' pair of Owens and Rowen, 8-4. In the final doubles contest, Lynzee Kever and Volkova beat Dandik and Paradis, 8-4.
The Bearcats return to action on Wednesday, April 11 when they travel to Kentucky for a 6 p.m. match.
