AKRON, Ohio -- The University of Cincinnati men's soccer team fought Akron to a 0-0 draw on Thursday night (April 12) at cold, rainy Lee Jackson Field. UC is now 0-1-2 during the spring season.
Senior John-Michael Boggs and Freshman Matt Williams combined for the shutout, UC's second straight. The Bearcats drew Ohio State, 0-0, last weekend in Dayton.
Akron controlled the run of play for much of the first half, but the UC defense was up to the task, turning away each Zips scoring opportunity.
The Bearcats made adjustments at halftime and played much better during the second half, creating scoring chances on counter attacks. The defense again was solid, led by an excellent effort from freshman Judson McKinney.
"Our guys showed a lot of character and commitment playing shorthanded against a quality opponent at their place," said head coach Hylton Dayes. "We were solid defensively and both goalkeepers played well."
The Bearcats are hosting a free Soccer Association for Youth clinic at Gettler Stadium on Friday night (April 13) from 6-8 p.m.
UC will play host to the Bearcat Invitational on Sunday, April 15, at Gettler Stadium. UC will take on the Cinicnnati Kings of the professional United Soccer Leagues in the first contest at 11 a.m. The Kings will then square off with Northern Kentucky at 12:30 p.m. before UC and NKU wrap things up at 2 p.m.
