SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati men's golf team will compete in its final regular season tournament of the season when it takes part in the Wolf Run Intercollegiate, beginning on Sunday, April 15. The two-day, 54-hole tournament will take place at the Wolf Run Golf Club in Zionsville, Ind. and will be hosted by IUPUI. UC comes into the tournament having placed in the top four in each of its last four tournaments.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The Wolf Run Intercollegiate will be played on April 15-16 at the Wolf Run Golf Club, just outside of Indianapolis, Ind. IUPUI, ranked 244th nationally by Golfweek, is the tournament host and will be joined in the field by 11 other squads from throughout the Midwest. The balance with current Golfweek rankings includes Akron (104), Ball State (166), Bradley (258), Butler (261), Cincinnati (214), Dayton (252), Detroit Mercy (190), Indianapolis (N/A), Miami {Ohio} (204), Oakland (213) and Rend Lake Junior College (N/A).
THE LINE-UP: A total of six golfers will make the trip to the tournament with the exact line-up still to be determined. The remaining golfer will compete as an individual. Seniors Geoff Newman and Joe Young will play, along with junior Alex Wenzel and the sophomore trio of Albert Fernandez, Paul Marshall and Blake Tucker.
LEADING THE WAY: The unquestioned leader and top player for the Bearcats this season has been senior Geoff Newman. In 11 tournaments, Newman has finished in the top-20 seven times, with a pair of top-five tallies to his credit. The Cincinnati native holds a team-best 74.3 average. In the last few weeks, classmate Joe Young has stepped up, winning the LaRosa's Collegiate Cup on the strength of rounds of 68 and 69. Young followed it up with top-20 finishes in two of thee next three tournaments.
CAREER BEST: The UC Men's Spring Invitational delivered a notable performance by an unlikely Bearcat. Sophomore Ryan Heinly, playing in just his second tournament after joining the team last fall as a walk-on, scored a second round score of 72 to obliterate his career-best. Heinly's first collegiate round last fall ended with a score of 89 and the two rounds since have featured scores of 76 and 72. Heinly finished tied for 11th in the tournament.
UP NEXT: UC travels to Louisville, Ky. to compete in its second BIG EAST Championship. The event, to be held at the Cardinal Club, will run from April 22-24.
