SETTING THE SCENE: In one of its biggest events of the year, the University of Cincinnati rowing team will battle for the title of the SIRA Championships this weekend (April 20-22) in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The women will begin their journey on Friday with the varsity pair and continue on Saturday with the novice eight, varsity four, varsity eight and second varsity eight heats and semifinals. UC will be vying for a spot in each grouping's Sunday A-final, with the balance of the fields going to the B and C-finals.
STRONG SPRING: The Bearcats have proven that all of the winter training has paid off with the team recording some of their best times, coming in their best finishes, and ultimately showing just what they are made of. The women kicked off the spring with a very impressive start competing against top ranked teams Alabama and Notre Dame. The second varsity eight crew team was able to record the squad's best finish of 7:05.7, finishing second.
SPLIT SECOND: In their second race of the spring season, the Bearcats raced in a dual against Drake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. UC completed the day with a split as the Bearcats second varsity eight topped Drake by 20 seconds. Unfortunately, it would not be enough for the Bearcats to come out on top again as Drake pulled away, beating the varsity eight A team by three seconds.
SECOND IS THE BEST: At their final home race of the season, the Bearcats were able to take home second place finishes in all four races. The Bearcats competed against Dayton, Eastern Michigan, and Indiana. It was a vast improvement from last season in a rematch with the three schools.
FINAL STRETCH: The Bearcats are heading down their finalstretch and with only three events to go, the team is looking to gain additional speed. The SIRA race starts an important stretch that also includes the BIG EAST Championships on April 29 in Worchester, Mass. and the NCAA Regionals, back in Oak Ridge on May 12-13.
