SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati women's golf team will draw its season to a close, taking part in the 2007 BIG EAST Championship April 22-24 in Louisville, Ky. The event will be played at the Oxmoor Country Club. The Bearcats enter the tournament seeded fourth of the seven league schools and are on a bit of a hot streak after finishing in the top-five in each of its last three tournaments.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The 2007 BIG EAST Women's Golf Championship will be played April 22-24 at the Oxmoor Country Club in Louisville, Ky. Each of the league's seven participating schools will be on hand to try and unseat defending champion Louisville. The Cardinals, ranked 34th nationally by Golfweek, are the No. 1 seed and tournament hosts. The balance of the field in order of seed and with Golfweek ranking includes USF (46), Notre Dame (68), Cincinnati (115), Georgetown (148), St. John's (155) and Rutgers (203). Each of the three days of the tournament will consist of 18 holes with the team's being reseeded after each round. THE LINE-UP: Cincinnati's top five players will once again be in Head Coach Janet Carl's line-up as the Bearcats wrap up the 2006-07 season. As usual, junior Hillery Wilson heads the line-up with junior Allison Mayborg occupying the second spot. Sophomores Marianne Erb and Sarah Stamper, along with senior Sarah Bires will also compete at the BIG EAST Championship.
LAST YEAR'S BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP: The Bearcats completed their 2005-06 season with a fifth place finish in the 2006 BIG EAST Championship at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Lake Jovita, Fla.. Sophomore Allison Mayborg was UC's top finisher, tying for 13th overall. The Bearcats saved their best round for last, combining for a 310 in the final 18 holes to finish at 935. Louisville won the team title by a convincing 21 shots over Georgetown with a team total of 889. Individually, it was Mayborg shooting a final round 75 to end the tournament at 231. Teammates Chelsa Dooley and Hillery Wilson were just three shots back of Mayborg, in a tie for 16th. Dooley shot a final round 78, while Wilson was at a UC tournament-best 74.
HOPING FOR MORE: Through just over two seasons at Cincinnati, junior Hillery Wilson has already accomplished a great deal. As a Bearcat, Wilson has won nine tournaments, set the school record for lowest round and the mark for lowest single-season average. She is enjoying another great season this year, holding a team-best 76.1 average. At the Rio Verde Invitational (March 9-11), Wilson broke her own school record and established a new tournament-best with a round of 68. With four wins and four other top-10 finishes, Wilson is ranked 166th nationally by Golfweek. Last fall, Golfweek tabbed Wilson as one of the nation's five players to keep an eye on.
