SIMPSONVILLE, Ky.---Albert Fernandez's round of 76 was the best of the day for the University of Cincinnati men's golf team, which endured a disappointing day at the 2007 BIG EAST Championship. UC slipped to 11th in the team standings on Monday in the event which is being played at the Cardinal Club just outside Louisville.
Fernandez's second round score has him in a log jam for 45th place in the standings, a position also held by UC's Geoff Newman and Blake Tucker. The latter duo carded rounds of 77 and 78, respectively during round two.
After shooting a 305 in the opening round, Cincinnati shot only two shots higher in the second round, but improved scores by the competition dropped the Bearcats to 11th in the standings. Louisville continues to run away with the team lead, holding a 16 shot advantage of Notre Dame. St. John's, in second after round one, fell to fifth with a second day 297.
UC's Joe Young couldn't follow up his opening round 71, fading to a tie for 19th with a second round 149. The Geneva, Ill. native finds himself five shots out of an all-conference honor, awarded to the top-10 players at the conclusion of the tournament.
The championship concludes on Tuesday with play getting underway at 8 a.m.
