SETTING THE SCENE: The University of Cincinnati women's rowing team will be heading to the most competitive rowing challenge they have seen all year; the BIG EAST Championships. The Bearcats will travel to Lake Quinsigamond in Worchester, Massachusetts this Sunday, April 29 to take on the top teams in the BIG EAST Conference.
SPRING RALLY: Top times and much improved finishes have carried over for the Bearcats from the fall to winter training and now into the spring. The Bearcats have competed against numerous top ranked teams, proving that they can race with the best. The second varsity eight team was even able to capture their squad's best finish of 7:05.7, placing second in their first spring match.
TOO CLOSE: Against top competition Drake University, the Bearcats took the lake for a dual in their second spring race. The dual's results ended in a draw, but the Bearcats showed impressive improvement when the varsity eight team topped Drake in the first race by 20 seconds. Drake did pull away in the second race though and was able to beat the varsity eight A team by three seconds.
HOME SWEET HOME: In the Bearcats lone home race of the year at East Fork State Park against Dayton, Eastern Michigan and Indiana, UC had a lot to prove. The team was able to find success and much improvement at the event as the Bearcat took home second place in all four of the day's races.
SIRA SUCCESS: The Bearcats were able to come home from the SIRA Championships with a big grin this year due to vast success on the lake. For the first time in Bearcat rowing history, all of the varsity rowing teams went on to the `A' grand finals. The varsity four crew captured the bronze, the junior varsity eights placed fourth, the novice eights placed second in the `B' petite finals, and the varsity eights placed sixth. The varsity eights had the toughest finish with only six seconds gapping the teams at the finish.
FINALE: In the team's final race of the season, the Bearcats will head to the Central/South Regional Championships at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The site is a familiar one for UC as they have faced Notre Dame and Alabama on the lake, while also competing in the SIRA Championships.
