CINCINNATI -- The University of Cincinnati's football program has been recognized as one of 32 teams in the NCAA Bowl Subdivision to graduate 70 percent or more of their student-athletes by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).
"Our young men are not only good football players, but great students," said head coach Brian Kelly. "I think it's also indicative of the resources we have here at the University of Cincinnati. The Nancy Hamant Academic Center and our academic services staff have done an outstanding job of helping us to achieve this goal."
The overall graduation rate of the 107 schools that responded to the AFCA's Graduation Rate Survey was 60 percent, surpassing the mark of 58 percent in each of the previous two years. The survey involves the freshman class from the academic year of 2001-02, including those who entered at that time but did not receive financial aid until after their initial year, or who transferred from another institution and subsequently received a grant-in-aid.
One of four members of the BIG EAST Conference to be honored for its high number of graduates, Cincinnati finished the 2006 football season with an 8-5 record. UC defeated Western Michigan 27-24 in the inaugural International Bowl on Jan. 6, 2007 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.
Cincinnati returns 15 starters in 2007, including three players who earned 2006 All-BIG EAST honors. The Bearcats open the season on Thursday, Aug. 30 vs. Southeast Missouri State at Nippert Stadium.
