CINCINNATI---Sophomore baseball player Evan Sanford (Aurora, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) has been selected as the University of Cincinnati's representative to the annual NCAA Leadership Conference which takes place this weekend. The event brings together student-athletes from Divisions I, II and III from across the nation and will be held May 27-31 in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
The goal of the conference each year is to provide an opportunity for student-athletes to gather and discuss key issues, while giving them a chance to develop skills that will make them more effective leaders upon returning to their respective campuses.
Some of the topics that will be discussed during the five-day conference include the demands and expectations of student-athletes; inclusion education; international student-athlete experiences; recruiting visits; student-athlete responsibility; party behaviors; trust gaps within intercollegiate athletics and sportsmanship.
"Evan is such a great representative of our program," UC head baseball coach Brian Cleary said. "His involvement on campus beyond baseball is very impressive and has obviously been recognized by others with his selection to this conference. I think that he will be a great ambassador for UC at this event. Evan is a great model of the way college athletics should work."
Eligible delegates for the conference are student-athletes that are in good academic standing and have athletic eligibility remaining for the following year. The candidates are those that have been recognized as leaders on campus and in the community at their respective schools.
The NCAA selects one participant from each school which participates in the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. The conference is provided at no cost to those institutions.
Sanford enjoyed a solid season out of the Bearcats' bullpen this year, appearing in a team-best 19 games. He finished with a 1-0 record, a 2.70 ERA and 22 strikeouts. Off the field, Sanford is co-vice president of UC's Committee to Promote Athlete Welfare and Success (CPAWS) and is a baseball team representative on the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC).
