CINCINNATI-- After allowing his hair to go uncut for more than a year, the University of Cincinnati football team's Dustin Grutza (Maysville, KY/Mason County) allowed his long locks to be cut for a good cause. The two-year starter for UC donated his hair to Beautiful Lengths, a program designed to aid women fighting cancer.

"This started because some of my teammates and I deciding to not get haircuts until the end of the (2006) season," said Grutza. "I have had friends, including Nick Davila, donate hair in memory of specific loved ones in the past."

With stylist Crystal Carpenter, of Shear Elegance in Maysville, wielding the scissors, Grutza collected several small ponytails of more than nine inches length. The hair was collected in a gallon-sized plastic bag and is being sent to Beautiful Lengths.

"It is definitely worth it to donate my hair to someone who can put it to use," Grutza added. "I am going to miss it a little bit, but there is someone out there who will appreciate it more than I will."

Grutza had to wait until his hair was longer than the minimum of eight inches long for Beautiful Lengths. It takes six donors to create a Beautiful Lengths wig. Beautiful Lengths creates wigs from healthy hair for women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatments.

Grutza concluded the 2006 season completing 137-of-225 pass attempts for 1,632 yards, nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions. A starter in 11 games last fall, the Bearcats finished with an 8-5 record after winning the inaugural International Bowl.
