CINCINNATI - Former UC standout guard/forward James White was a part of the San Antonio Spurs' 2007 NBA Championship run that ended last night with an 83-82 Game 4 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. It is the Spurs' fourth NBA title in the last nine years.
White, who played at Cincinnati from 2003-06, played in six games for the Spurs this season as a rookie, all coming in the last six weeks of the regular season. White averaged 8.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game. He posted a career night in his first NBA start on April 16 versus the Memphis Grizzlies, scoring 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Two nights later, in the regular-season finale, White picked up a season-best five rebounds versus Denver.
As a Bearcat, White averaged 10.3 points and 4.2 rebounds, while appearing in 93 games. His senior season, the high-flying White was named honorable mention all-BIG EAST and led Cincinnati in scoring with 16.3 points per game and became the 44th player in program history to accumulate over 1,000 career points.
In the 106-year history of UC basketball, seven Bearcats, including White, have won a total of nine NBA titles. Jim Holstein (UC 1950-52) and Ron Bonham (UC 1962-64) are the only players to win multiple crowns, capturing back-to-back titles with the Minneapolis Lakers in 1953-54 and the Boston Celtics in 1962-64, respectively. Tom Thacker (UC 1961-63; Boston 1968), Oscar Robertson (UC 1958-60; Milwaukee 1971), Derrek Dickey (UC 1971-73; Golden State 1975), and Jim Ard (UC 1968-70; Boston 1976) are the other four to earn NBA crowns.
