LEXINGTON, Ky.---Hillery Wilson, a senior on the University of Cincinnati women's golf team opened play in the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship with a round of 77 on Monday. The event is being played at the Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, Ky.
Wilson's (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) score leaves her tied for 62nd after the first of two qualifying rounds. She will need to stay within the top-64 players to advance to the first round of match play which begins on Wednesday. Wilson earned a berth for the event after shooting a 77 at the Turkeyfoot Lake Golf Links in Akron, Ohio on May 26 in a sectional qualifier. A total of 155 players advanced from the sectional qualifiers which began with a record field of 735.
The winner of the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links receives a lengthy list of awards including:
- A gold medal and custody of the Robert F. Dwyer Trophy for one year.
- A 10-year exemption from sectional qualifying for U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championships
- A two-year exemption from sectional qualifying for the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship.
- A one-year exemption from sectional qualifying for the next U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship.
- An exemption from local qualifying for the next five U.S. Women's Open Championships.
During the 2006-07 season, Wilson led the Bearcats for the third straight season in average, reestablishing her own school record with a 76.1 average. As a junior, Wilson won four tournaments, pushing her career total to nine and set a UC record for lowest single round score with a 68.
