INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Former Bearcat student-athlete and current volunteer assistant coach Mary (Danner) Wineberg ran a personal-best 50.24 in the 400 meters to finish third at the 2007 AT&T USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and earn a spot on the U.S. team that will compete in the IAAF World Championships in Osaka, Japan.
Wineberg, a Cincinnati native and Walnut Hills graduate, has solidified herself as one of the top 400 runners in the nation and currently holds the fifth-fastest time in the world in the event.
Three other former Bearcats competed at the USA Outdoor Championships, with mixed results.
Two-time All-American David Payne just missed qualifying for a trip to Osaka with a fourth-place finish in the 110 hurdles. Payne managed a 13.22, finishing .04 behind David Oliver, who was third. Payne holds the fifth-fastest time in the world at 13.12, and was tops in the world for several weeks.
Former UC hurdler and current assistant coach Brandon Hon posted a disappointing 14.49 in the opening round of the 110 hurdles and did not advance. 2007 All-American Ashley Wilhelm finished 16th in the heptathlon with 5,268 points, her lowest outut of the 2007 campaign.
Two current Bearcats showed their potential in the Finish Line USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held concurrently with the senior championships.
Jasmine Cotten, a freshman on the 2007 squad, placed fourth in the heptathlon with 4,962 points. Sharika Thompson, also a freshman in 2007, sped to a personal-best 1:02.29 in the 400 hurdles, finishing 12th in the preliminaries.
