CINCINNATI---Five University of Cincinnati student-athletes, including a trio of first team selections, have been named Arthur Ashe Sports Scholars for the 2006-07 academic school year. The awards, named after the late tennis legend, honor minority student-athletes that excel not only in their respective sport, but in the classroom as well, while also being a positive figure in the community.
Cincinnati's first team honorees include baseball player Josh Harrison, women's basketball student-assistant coach Bianca Roldan-Jarus and swimmer Elyse Perez. That threesome was joined by second team selections Hannah Hinton of the tennis team and track and field participant Dominique Davis.
Harrison (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) enjoyed another strong campaign in his sophomore year as a Bearcat, earning second team all-region and all-BIG EAST accolades. He ranked among the conference leaders in multiple offensive categories, finishing the season with a .327 batting average, 17 doubles, nine home runs, 56 RBI and 21 stolen bases. Off the field, Harrison carries a 3.44 cumulative grade point average, while studying accounting. Harrison also serves his teammates as one of the baseball team representatives to UC's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Roldan-Jarus (Madrid, Spain/Residence Blume), a junior, made the transition to student assistant coach this season after suiting up for the UC women's basketball team the last two seasons. During the 2006-07 season, Roldan-Jarus helped the Bearcats to a 15-14 record and a berth in the BIG EAST Championship event. Away from hoops, Roldan-Jarus is a finance major holding a 3.83 GPA.
Perez (Corpus Christi, Texas/Mary Carroll), a junior, swam in eight different events during the season for the Bearcats, qualifying for the BIG EAST Championship in the 1650 freestyle and the 200 backstroke. In the classroom, Perez has a 3.89 GPA in fashion design.
Hinton (Gainesville, Fla./Buchholz) closed her collegiate career with a 17-13 overall record during the 2006-07 season, including a 16-9 record playing at No. 1 singles. Hinton's season highlight came at the Big Green Invitational, where she won four matches to advance to the singles final, defeating the No. 3 and No. 8 seeds along the way. Hinton graduated with a degree in communications from UC and carried a 3.78 GPA.
Davis (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville), a junior, was the Bearcats' top performer in the 400 meters during the outdoor season, posting a team-best mark of 56.72. She tallied a second place finish in the event at the Southern Ohio Cup and ran the anchor leg of the school-record 4x400 meter relay team which posted a time of 3:48.08 at the All-Ohio Championships. During the indoor campaign, Davis was also part of the record-setting 4x400 team that set a mark of 3:48.25 at the BIG EAST Championships. Davis is a 3.55 student studying marketing.
To be eligible to be named an Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar, student athletes must be a regular competitor in an intercollegiate sport, carry a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 and be active either on their campus or in their community.
