CINCINNATI--For the second consecutive year, University of Cincinnati senior golfer Hillery Wilson will take part in the U.S. Women's Amateur Open after she advanced through a sectional qualifier earlier this week. Wilson is now qualified for the 107th edition of the Championship, Aug. 6-12 at the Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.
Wilson (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) finished tied for second in her qualifier with a round of 72, just one shot out of first place. The qualifier was held at the Cincinnati Country Club on July 9.
This marks the second big tournament of the summer for Wilson who also took part in the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship in June. Wilson made UC history at that event, becoming the first Bearcat ever to advance to the match play round of the event. She nearly knocked off the No. 5 seed in the opening round, dropping a heartbreaking 1-up match on the final hole.
Wilson's first trip to the U.S. Women's Amateur Open last season saw her shoot rounds of 84 and 76 to finish tied for 119th and missing the cut for match play.
The 2007 U.S. Women's Amateur Open will get underway with stroke play qualifying rounds on Aug. 6-7. Advancing players will begin match play on Wednesday, Aug. 8.
During the 2006-07 season, Wilson led the Bearcats for the third straight season in average, reestablishing her own school record with a 76.1 average. As a junior, Wilson won four tournaments, pushing her career total to nine and set a UC record for lowest single round score with a 68.
