NEWPORT, R.I.-- The University of Cincinnati was projected to finish fifth in the 2007 BIG EAST Conference football standings in a preseason poll of media representatives who cover the league teams.

The Bearcats have 15 starters returning, including seven on offense and eight on defense, from a squad that finished 8-5 overall and 4-3 in league play a year ago. After debuting with a 27-24 victory over Western Michigan to win the inaugural International Bowl, head coach Brian Kelly enters his first full year at the helm of the Bearcats.

West Virginia was tabbed as the league favorite by the media earning 20 of the 24 first-place votes. Louisville received three first-place votes and was picked to finish second. The favorite to finish third, Rutgers landed one first-place selection. USF was selected to end the year fourth. Pittsburgh, Connecticut and Syracuse were chosen to finish behind Cincinnati.

The Bearcats begin preparations for the 2007 campaign on August 3. UC kicks off the season on August 30 when it hosts Southeast Missouri State at Nippert Stadium.
